I thought I'd have a change from gulls so headed up towards Hawkshead. Went via Rampside, the ploughed field was empty and the outflow at Roosebeck held just a handful of Common Gull. The slurried fields at Aldingham were full of birds but only Black Headed and Common Gulls. A Merlin flew across the road at Baycliff and a Sparrowhawk was hunting the hedgerows at Bardsea. There was a single Peregrine on the Glaxo chimney at Ulverston. Red Kite and Kestrel at Haverthwaite increased the raptor count for the day.
There were 3 Raven between Haverthwaite and Newby Bridge but little else, 3 Buzzard in Grizedale finished the raptor species count for the day. I stopped at Greenodd for a group of gulls, nearly all Lesser black backs with a few Common and Blackheads.
I couldn't resist finishing the day along the coast road. Aldingham was empty of gulls but there were a few at Roosebeck, Commons and Blackheads and a single 2nd winter Med Gull. Half a mile down the beach there was another group of gulls, this had a single ad Med Gull and a 1st winter bird sporting a green colour ring.
but it wasn't R805 so is it a new one or did I balls up ring reading yesterday. Some Med Gull machine!Anyway I thought I'd have a look at Cav Dock in the hope of finding a 1st winter bird with a green ring, it was getting late now and I didn't expect to find many birds on the sands - what I found was 1000s of birds on the sands. The light was fading fast but I did find a 2nd winter Med Gull amongst the hundreds of Blackheads.
