Reykjavik-in-Furness

9th March
If the mountain won't come to Mohammed, Mohammed must go to the mountain. So I find myself landing at Keflavik Airport in search of the white winged gulls that have eluded me in Furness. After 57 minutes in the country, first birds were 2 gull sp., couldn't even tell which type they were as it was blowing a blizzard. Then 2 duck sp. were seen but what they were not a clue. Then first bird to ID to species after 69 minutes was a Great Black Backed Gull.

The species list grew quickly with Starling, Grey Lag Goose and Fulmer seen gliding down a snow covered valley about one kilometre from the sea.

We then booked into our hotel - Hotel Laxnes, and The Laxnes Bird Observatory was open for business. Unbelievably the first bird recorded was a Gyr Falcon flying down the valley, watched it for about 4 minutes before it disappeared from view then closed the observatory for business that day because - how do you follow that?

Actually you can ....

Spent the evening chasing the Aurora Borealis in what promised to be the most spectacular display in Iceland for years - it wasn't.
